Across the HBCU ecosystem, three areas of opportunity exist to build upon historical success and provide a foundation for even greater accomplishment moving forward. NHBCUAAAF’s programs provide direct responses to these opportunities with measurable strategies and national impact.

Sustaining Operating Strategies for Alumni Associations

The Sustainable Operating Strategies© Initiative (S-O-S) is designed to provide a comprehensive training program for alumni organizations to build capacity and long-term sustainability.  The program focuses on alumni association governance, strategic planning, and policy and leadership development. The initial goal is to train 200 alumni leaders as sustainability specialists by 2026 with the ultimate goal of training at least one leader from each HBCU alumni association. By achieving the short- and long-term goals of this initiative, these alumni associations will strengthen their respective HBCUs in its efforts to educate and graduate a group of future leaders who can follow in the footsteps of a Thurgood Marshall or a Kamala Harris.

Student Engagement, Employment and Mentoring

The Student Engagement, Employment and Mentoring Initiative (SEEM) is designed to develop career pathways for HBCU students through internships, fellowships, scholarships, and certification programs. Students will be connected to industry leaders and employers and participate in our established partnership program with professional networks such as the Defense Acquisition University, Society of Human Resource Management and the Project Management Network, to name a few. Our partnership with the Sherman Williams Paint Company resulted in employment and summer internship opportunities for students from several HBCU institutions including North Carolina Central University, Alabama A&M University, Fayetteville State University and South Carolina State University. The goal of this effort is to place 500 students in high growth, above average paying employment positions across key industries within the next 3 years.

Civic Engagement and Advocacy

The Civic Engagement and Advocacy Initiative (CEAC) is designed to provide alumni and students with the tools and skills to become informed proactive citizens and advocates for fostering nonpartisan civic engagement to strengthen democracy and representation. These tools will aid in the development of ongoing, stronger relationships with local, state and national elected officials to produce outcomes in favor of our HBCU institutions. The goal for this initiative is to establish CEAC chapters on 25 campuses and double student voter participation by 2028. These CEAC chapters will serve as the conduit to address the critical social and civic issues that exist and provide a consolidated vehicle for the delivery of educational and professional support services.
